Last week’s clue: Some people consider a fly as an annoying pest; however, in this painting the fly on the base of a throne is a religious symbol of evil, sin, and death.

Answer: The fly belongs to Nicola di Maestro Antonio’s painting Madonna and Child Enthroned circa 1490. The formal qualities of this painting can be readily appreciated by modern eyes, but the symbolic religious meanings contained in many of the details in the painting are generally now forgotten.
