The young Dennis Stock served as the model for Andreas Feininger in this portrayal of a photojournalist. Stock worked in this field and had recently joined Magnum, the world’s leading organization of documentary photographers. The year this portrait was made, he took a series of photographs of James Dean, including what is now the iconic image of the actor, in a rainy Times Square with his collar pulled up and a cigarette in his mouth. Stock is also known for his images of jazz musicians and films.
