Since 1979 Jackie Kielkopf has presented the fragment as a whole in hauntingly beautiful paintings of sand, water, cloth, and the human figure. Kielkopf investigates the metaphorical and sculptural possibilities of architecture - in particular, the corners where walls meet and the junctures of wall and ceiling. Her painted fragments are conceived for installation at these architectural meeting points. Her irregularly shaped works of oil on wood and oil on canvas also contain unlikely juxtapositions of material and image. A strange kind of alchemy is at work as images redefine one another, presenting varying dynamic relationships.
