Artists: Laura Stack and Anne Sugnet

Laura Stack and Anne Sugnet come to the abundance of the natural world and its ever-shifting patterns of replication with great reverence. Both have experienced profound events linked to the physical body and consider making art to be transcendent. Both Stack and Sugnet created images and objects that connected the ground with the sky, linking the physical and the spiritual. Through their art, Stack and Sugnet sought to create an antidote to a high-speed, high-tech world that operates beyond human pace.
Their exhibition, High Touch, featured Stack's black-and-white drawing of varying cellular arrangements and Sugnet's mixed-media installations-masses of inflated latex forms and hand-shaped pieces of wax and lead scattered across the gallery walls. High Touch offered a poetic investigation into the essence of things, with traces of touch, slow amassed time, things becoming and unbecoming, and tender constellations of forms. In both bodies of work primordial forms emerged, suggesting seeds, cones, spiral, cells, or the cosmos. These shapes were familiar, and there was comfort in that recognition. Yet they were located in mysterious spaces, so they were not didactic, but more deja vu, that fleeting sense of knowing, shrouded in mystery. It seemed we had been there before, perhaps in another life, perhaps as a cell or a star.
These works lulled viewers into the contemplation of what is simultaneously infinite and infinitesimal. They held space for us to breathe, to fully incarnate in the present moment. Viewers were asked: Consider your own material essence, the form that carries your spirit. Feel the contours, the edges within and without you, the skin that protects you from the elements, the muscles that hold your skeleton together-as your eyes read the patterns on this page. Breathe.
