Thomas Rose’s constructed drawings, collages and installations are inspired, in part, by the work of architect Carlo Scarpa. Rose’s recent travels to Italy and his study of a particular cemetery designed by Scarpa led to his investigation of other cemeteries and funeral narratives. Rose has long been intrigued with the sublime in the architecture of death. He remains deeply fascinated by its potential, especially since the death of his parents in 1988 and 1989. Mercies and Reason combined his interest in language with his belief in the poetic possibilities of materials and architecture.
