From Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program
Artists: Armando Gutierrez G., John Acosta, Carlos Menchaca and Michael Russel
October 13 – November 29, 1992
Minnesota Artists Gallery
This quincentennial mural by artists from Minnesota’s Chicano community reflected Columbus’ “discovery” of America and the ensuing clash between European and native peoples. Designed by Armando Gutierrez G. for an eighteen-foot high by thirty-foot wide wall of the museum’s Sculpture Court, the mural’s execution was undertaken by Armando Gutierrez G., John Acosta, Carlos Menchaca and Michael Russel. The mural’s creation occurred over an eight-week period with the artists working during public hours, allowing museum audiences access to the entire process.
