Until Death Do Us Part
From Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program
Artists: Will Agar, John Gregor, Sue Kyllönen, Peter Latner, Mark Luinenburg and Diana Watters
October 20 – December 1, 1991
Minnesota Artists Gallery
This exhibition explored the cultural traditions of weddings as seen by six Minnesota photographers whose works challenge the typically generic documentation available in conventional wedding photography. The photographs of Will Agar, John Gregor, Sue Kyllönen, Peter Latner, Mark Luinenburg and Diana Watters presented highly individualized visions of this social rite and revealed the complexities of human relationships and rituals. In a catalogue essay entitled “Ritual, Etiquette and Reminiscence: A Social History of Wedding Photography in the 20th Century,” cultural historian Karal Ann Marling of the University of Minnesota looked at how wedding photography reflects significant shifts in American social etiquette and discussed the historical context behind the images in this exhibition.
